Many, such as George McCartney’s, Cumnock, produced a variety of products such as threshing machines, mill equipment and bridge frameworks. Others developed very specific niche markets. For example, the engineering firms of Newmilns and Darvel concentrated on manufacturing machines for the local lace industry, whereas Kilwinning, Irvine and Hurlford manufacturers produced chains anchors and propellers.
