Both Ayr and Kilmarnock had trams for a limited period early in the 20th century.
Trams were introduced to Ayr in 1901 and were to run for thirty years. The line ran from Prestwick Cross in the north, along Prestwick Road to Main Street, across the New Bridge, then turned sharply left to go up High Street. The line continued eastward then south to the terminus at St. Leonard’s. An extension in 1902 continued the line from St. Leonard’s to Alloway. In 1904 a line was run to the Grammar School. In 1913 a line was laid via George Street and Whitletts Road to the new Racecourse which had been opened the year before.
In Kilmarnock the trams ran from 1904-1926. The main line in Kilmarnock ran from the Glasgow Road area (Beansburn) down through the town centre to Riccarton – and there was also a spur from the Cross up London Road to Hurlford.
