The Duncan family seem to have farmed North Palmerston, Ochiltree Parish, from before c1742 when James Duncan was born. James died on 29th day of October 1829 in his 87th year; he married Agnes McGavin on 14th December 1771 and they were married for 58 years - had 7 children, 51 Grand-children and 21 Great-grand-children. James lived and died within less than a mile of North Palmerston. His wife Agnes McGavin died in the January of the next year.

John Duncan, son of James Duncan and Agnes McGavin, was born c1778. This John Duncan in Palmerston and Mary Mearns in Burnockmiln both in Ochiltree gave in their names on 12th November and were married on 25th November 1803. John died aged 91 in 18th December 1869 at North Palmerston, of influenza. His son John jnr. was the informant.

John Duncan jnr. was the son of John Duncan and Mary Mearns. He was born 26 July 1806 and was baptized 10 August in Palmerston. John married Margaret Millar on 11th June 1852 in Ochiltree and they had several children all presumably born at North Palmerston. The Ochiltree Monumental Inscriptions give John Duncan, jnr. died at Palmerston 4th January 1893 aged 86 and Margaret Millar died 1st May 1899 aged 69.

Census Records
In the 1841 Census of Ochiltree John Duncan snr. was described as a 60 year old, widowed farmer. He was also listed as the head of the household in 1851 and 1861. However, in 1861, John Duncan, jnr, and his wife Margaret Millar are also listed at North Palmerston with their children. In 1871 and 1881 John, jnr. was the head of the household.
