Miner down the pit, with bonnet and flaming torch.
Gerard Boland e-mailed some information, as follows :-
''This is not a flaming torch. It may look like one but it is an oil lamp. I have a photo of my father - a miner in Kames Colliery, Muirkirk - with the same oil lamp. It was also called a Teapot Lamp (Teepit Lamp) in Muirkirk. After speaking to and showing a 86-yr old miner the photograph, he told me it was called a Tally Lamp and it was filled with oil made from animal fat''
