Building Spiers' School

| Date From | | The workmen at Spiers' School, Beith, in front of the almost completed building. The money for Spiers School was left by John Spiers of Marshalland, Beith. It was opened in September 1888. Most of the pupils came from
Beith, but some came from as far south as Ayr and Maybole. The first Headmaster was R. Bruce Lockhart, on a salary of £400. The school offered: bursaries of £5 annually, and free education to 2 children from the parish of Beith; 16 school bursaries of £8 annual value and free education to another 16 children of the parish of Beith to be selected by competition; 16 senior bursaries of £10 open to all children attending; 3 university or technical bursaries of £30 annual value open
to all pupils attending. The fees were 3 guineas per annum in the preparatory classes, 5 guineas in the lower school and 6 guineas in the upper school. Purpose-built secondary schools resulted in the closure of
Spier's School and it was demolished in 1984. |
