Spinning machine, Catrine Mills

| Date From | c1960 | Female workers run machines converting raw cotton into cotton fibre on spools and shutters at Catrine Mills. The Cotton Works were established when the original mill house was built in 1787. The Bleach House designed by Archibald Buchanan was added in 1823. The works played a key role in spinning, weaving and finishing fine household goods and window hollands. Owned by James Finlay's, the works were an important part of their business in Scotland. The mill was powered by water from the River Ayr via a mill pond, shared with the neighbouring Muirkirk Iron Works. The original wooden wheels were replaced by Fairburn and Lillie wheels measuring more than 18 feet across. The works were closed in the 1970s and much of the site was demolished.. |
