Glenburn Colliery (Auchincruive 4/5)

| Date From | c1955 | Glenburn was Auchincruive's 4,5,6 & 7. She was the first all electric pit and the first to go under the sea. That area was call Fairfield or the slope to the miners. It's entrance was by the bridge to St Andrew's caravan park. Glenburn was sunk between1910/11 and 1914. The production records suggest it was mine driving that was taking place. In 1914 the first houses in Glenburn Rows were allocated to the incoming miners. After that she was producing 1/4 million tons a year by hand up to its closure in 1973. This image shows the pit head and rail waggons being loaded after the coal had been cleaned. |
