Hosiery works in Auchinleck, with women workers at their knitting machines. Young girls are winding pirns. A 'pirn' is the Scots word for a 'reel, bobbin or spool'. often made of wood. Pirnmill in Arran is supposed to derive its name from a mill there that made pirns for the thread mills in Paisley.
