Machine Shop, Glenfield and Kennedy

| Date From | 1950 | Overview of the machine shop at Glenfield and Kennedy's factory in Kilmarnock. In 1852 Thomas Kennedy, a Kilmarnock gunsmith, developed and patented a method of measuring and metering water. At a time when piped water was becoming generally available, the water companies needed to be able to measure consumption, and Kennedy's invention was soon in strong demand world wide. In 1865 he and others formed the Glenfield Engineering Company Limited chiefly to manufacture parts for Kennedy's meters. The companies merged as Glenfield & Kennedy Limited in 1899, and at that time employed 2,400 workers. The company manufactured 'every kind of machinery connected to the control and measurement of fluids' from street drinking water fountains to river barrages and hydro-electric plants. It remained a world leader in its field into the 1960s, but suffered from increasing competition, and went into receivership in the late 1970s. The extensive site, covers some 26 acres on both sides of the River Irvine, and has now been cleared and replaced with small industrial units. |
