| Date From | 1890 | Managers and staff at McCartney's engineering works, Cumnock. Some of the men carry tools of the trade, particularly hammers. There is also a dog. George McCartney began in business at Clocklownie Farm, Cumnock, in 1812 and moved to Cumnock in 1832 when he built these engineering works. McCartney died in 1868, and was succeeded in the business by his son-in-law, George Goldie, who died in 1896. The business was a general iron casting and engineering works, though McCartney had been involved in refining the workings of threshing mills, and making parts for threshing and other mills constituted a good part of the business. McCartney's works closed around 1933. |
