Blackwood & Mortons Carpet Factory

| Date From | 1937 | General view of Blackwood and Mortons 7 storey carpet factory in Burnside, Kilmarnock. The manufacture of carpets in Kilmarnock began in 1777 and grew rapidly in the 19th century, with the leading firm being Gregory, Thomson & Co. Robert Blackwood and Gavin Morton formed their partnership in 1908 and it quickly grew to be the biggest carpet business in the town, and well-known worldwide. The mill shown here was built in 1935. The company was taken over in 1982 and the site was virtually cleared by 1985.
